Panaman, a 6655 gross ton freighter, was built in 1913 at Sparrows Point, Maryland, for the American Hawaiian Steamship Company. She was taken over by the Navy for World War I service in August 1918 and placed in commission in mid-month as USS Panaman (ID # 3299). Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, she took cargo to France in a round-trip voyage during September and October. Upon returning to the U.S. she was refitted to carry large numbers of horses, and made a second trip to and from France in October and November. Panaman then began conversion to a troop transport. Reassigned in December to the Cruiser and Transport Force, the ship brought nearly eleven-thousand war veterans home from Europe during the first eight months of 1919. USS Panaman was decommissioned in September 1919 and returned to her owner. As S.S. Panaman she had a subsequent commercial career that lasted through World War II. In July 1947 the old ship was sold to the Italian Government.
