S.S. Silver Shell (American Tanker, 1915)

Silver Shell, a 5606 gross ton (12,000 tons displacement) tanker built at Wilmington, Delaware, in 1915 for the Shell Oil Company, was inspected by the Third Naval District in January 1918 for possible U.S. Navy service. Though assigned the registry ID # 2270, she was not taken over by the Navy and remained in civilian custody.

At the yard of her builder, Harlan and Hollingsworth of Wilmington, Delaware, probably when first completed.
This ship was a sister of S.S. Gold Shell (built 1916), which served as USS Gold Shell (ID # 3021) in 1917-1919.

Possibly photographed in the vicinity of New York City on 23 January 1918, when she was inspected by the Third Naval District.
Built in 1915 by Harlan and Hollingsworth of Wilmington, Delaware, this ship was considered for World War I era U.S. Navy service, and assigned the registry ID # 2270, but was not taken over.
