USS Montauk, a 434 gross ton tug built in 1899 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, operated prior to World War I as the civilian tug Luckenbach # 3. She was purchased by the Navy in October 1917 and placed in commission as USS Montauk (SP-1213). For the rest of the "Great War" and during nearly all of 1919, she served in the New York City region.
